Hopkins Allen Serial Number Shotgun

If it is Hopkins & Allen MFG Co, sometime between 1868 and1898. Hopkins & Allen ARMS Co would be from 1898 to 1915. A 16gauge would more likely (but not certainly) have been made after1900.

Hopkins & Allen made at least thirteen different models of single barrel single shot shotguns and the serial number you give would fit any of them. We are going to need those photographs or at least a very good description including any and all markings and features (hammer type or hammerless, outside safety lever falling block action) of the gun before we can begin to tell you anything about it. Need same information to make a guess about value. Value? These guns were inexpensive (read cheap) even when new selling for between $10 to $20 and haven't appreciated that much over the years. Current values. A prime condition example (rare) that appears to have come out of the factory yesterday afternoon might fetch as much as $125 while a rusty metal, rotten or broken wood, missing parts piece of junk fit only for parts salvage or as a moonshine still stirring stick might bring as little as $10.

Serial number stamped on the lower tang just behind the trigger guard is indicative of a Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich,CT (1892 to 1930) made single barrel shotgun. If it is then the gun was made in 1897. There should be some marking (name) stamped on the left side of the receiver/frame. If there is, what is it ? Can't tell you the gauge of the gun with out seeing it as Crescent guns were made in all gauges 12,16, 20 gauge and .410 caliber bore but 12 gauge was most common. Measure the diameter of the muzzle and a 12 gauge will measure about 3/4 or .750 inches. With a gun that old it was designed and made to shoot the ammunition in use back then which was 2 1/2 shot shells loaded with black powder and lead shot. it was not designed for more modern and longer, 2 9/16 and 2 3/4 inch shells loaded with smokeless powder and certainly not modern 3 inch or magnum shells loaded with high pressure smokeless powder and steel shot. My advice is Don't attempt to shoot the gun! Value? Old single barrels were inexpensive well made utility grade guns selling for between $5.00 and $15.00 new and haven't appreciated that much since. Current values are determined by the condition of the gun, the amount of original finish remaining on the metal and wood as well as the mechanical condition. A prime condition example (rare) that appears to have come out of the factory yesterday afternoon might fetch as much as $150 (one in .410 bore might bring $175 to $200) while a rusty metal, rotten or broken wood and missing parts piece of junk fir only for parts salvage or as a tent peg might bring as little as $10.00. Most I have seen sold on the various gun auction sites have sold for between $25.00 and $75.00
